Designability Cheque Handover

Designability is a charity close to our hearts. Sarah Jayne (the inspiration behind our charitable trust) spent much of her life in a wheelchair. So when we found out about the Wizzybug, an innovative powered wheelchair designed specifically for young children, we knew we wanted to help.

Sadly, there is often no NHS funding for powered mobility for children under 5. So Designability operate a loan scheme to make Wizzybugs available for free to transform children’s independence and movement.

Each incredible chair costs £4,850 and when a child outgrows the wheelchair, it gets refurbished ready for another child in need. Knowing how important it is for children to move about and explore during those early years of life, our goal was to raise enough to pay for a brand new Wizzybug to add to the Designability fleet.

Thanks to the amazing fundraising efforts from our January Challenge teams, on 2nd July, our Chair Joy West was delighted to be able to handover a cheque for £4,850 to Designability to fund a brand new Wizzybug.  And the chance to change a child’s life.

As our very first cheque handover, this was a poignant moment. Seeing the joy that a Wizzybug can bring, as children experience being able to whizz about effortlessly, feels a particularly fitting tribute to Sarah Jane.  And one we hope she would be proud of.

Joy West, Chair of the trustees explains what it means for the Trust:

Handing over our first cheque was a proud moment. The Wizzybug is such an incredible invention, making a real difference to children and their families. Which is what the Sarah Jayne Charitable Trust is all about.

The team at Designability were thrilled too. As a small charity, having local support makes a big difference as Gemma Harvey, Senior Fundraising Officer explains:

It is so great to have this support from the Sarah Jayne Charitable Trust. It will mean a great deal to the family who will soon be welcoming the Wizzybug into their home.

Wizzybugs enable children to build confidence, have fun and explore their surroundings. The SJCT Wizzybug will help unlock fun childhood experiences for a young disabled child – from playing with siblings, to being mischievous on days out with the family!

A big thanks to the trust for this very special donation which will add another Wizzybug to our fleet and change the life of a disabled child!
